What is a Newborn Care Specialist?
A Newborn Care Specialist is an individual who comes to the home to equip, teach, and support parents on how to take care of their infants. We also come in at night and take care of the baby so that parents can get a good nights sleep.
Newborn Development
A newborn care specialist plays an important role in tracking your newborn's development milestones and acting quickly if there are any concerns. During the first three months, a baby goes through rapid changes, gaining head control, learning to focus their vision, starting to smile socially, cooing and babbling, and more. The specialist will monitor your baby's progress and ensure they are meeting physical, cognitive, and social milestones for their age. If your newborn seems delayed or is missing milestones, the specialist can recommend seeking pediatrician guidance or early intervention services.
The specialist can also suggest age-appropriate activities and games to promote healthy development in areas like motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and language. Reading books together, singing songs, doing tummy time, using rattles and soft blocks, and playing tracking games with faces and objects are all great ways to stimulate a newborn's growing brain and senses. With their expertise in normal newborn development, a specialist can explain what activities are suitable for your baby's current abilities and temperament. Taking advantage of this guidance early on helps set up healthy patterns for the future.
How can our Newborn Care Specialists help YOU?
We help fill in the gaps. We help new parents by teaching them how to adjust and to understand this new life with a child. Here are some examples of day and night newborn care:
Feeding: bottle preparation, meal preparation, paced feeding
Baby hygiene care: bathing, dressing, diaper changing
Cleaning: sterilizing bottles, keeping nursery tidy, laundering baby clothing and linens
Organization: maintaining all baby supplies, restocking baby care items
Baby sleep: sleep conditioning; initiating a schedule for wake-windows and naps
Education: hands-on education on infant and mother care (breastfeeding, bathing, diapering, calming techniques, preparation of formula if bottle feeding); introduce parenting tips, helping parents to learn skills that will enable them to cope with their new responsibilities
Breastfeeding support
Keep a daily journal of baby schedules and moods
Screen for hurdles such as breastfeeding challenges or postpartum mood disorders
Create a nurturing, restful atmosphere in which parents may eat, shower, and nap

Questions to Ask a Newborn Specialist
To discover the specific training, experience and services offered by anyone who provides postpartum support, potential clients, nursing supervisors, physicians, midwives and others should ask the following questions of that person:
What training have you had? (If a doula shows a copy of a certificate, you might consider contacting the organization to see if it is genuine… Unfortunately some people copy and paste names on documents.)
Have you had a criminal background check, a recent current CPR certification?
Tell me/us about your experience as a postpartum doula or newborn specilaist.
What is your philosophy about parenting and supporting women
and their families during postpartum?May I/we meet to discuss my/our postpartum or newborn needs and the
role you will play in supporting me/us in the postpartum period? What different types of services do you offer?
May I/we call you with postpartum questions or concerns before
the birth? When do your services begin after birth?
What is your experience in breastfeeding support?
Do you work with one or more backups for times when
you are not available? May I/we meet them if you do?What are your fees and refund policies?
